Inside the core

Tickling at the nerve of life

By Mik Aidt

What is it that really makes people different?

Certainly, all of us have an opinion about this. But what does science say? And what does the artist have to say about the potentials hidden within us, and about our deepest thoughts about human life?

In this issue Djembe brings answers from both the physical, scientific, and the metaphysical, artistic worlds' points of view about what is the core of our life.

Through the Internet, scientists and professors are now able to shake a bit of the dust off their shoulders, and share the results of their work with the rest of the world. We decided to log on to the Net and look over their shoulders, to see how they have been writing about the "myth of the genes" in different mailing lists and newsgroups during the past year. In this number of Djembe, we've tried to clear up what is essential and what is non sensical. What is genetically determined and what cannot be determined by our genes.

Development on the Internet has been so fast that one can say that one year in cyberspace is equivalent to six years in the world of reality. Djembe has been on the Internet for over a year now and it feels precisely like an eternity, when we think of how many contacts we've made, and how much communication across the globe has been initiated by our homepage.

We have great expectations for our latest innovations: an interactive calender on the Net, where everyone can place information about cross cultural arrangements - good for spreading news of interest to the world citizens of Denmark. For those who are not on line, a condensed version of the calendar will be published in every number of Djembe. If you are arranging an event, don't forget to place your arrangement free of charge on: www.djembe.dk/kalender
